For the first time in parliamentary history, a record-breaking 92 Opposition MPs faced expulsion, marking the highest number of suspensions in a single session. The ousting resulted from protests and slogans raised in response to the Lok Sabha security breach on December 13.Of the 78 MPs expelled on December 18, 33 hailed from the Lok Sabha, and 45 from the Rajya Sabha. This follows the recent suspension of 14 Opposition lawmakers for similar reasons.Prominent figures like Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, TR Baalu, and Sougata Ray from the Lok Sabha were among the suspended members. The remaining 30 included representatives from DMK, Trinamool Congress, Congress, IUML, JD(U), and RSP.Rajya Sabha took action against 45 Opposition members, including Congress MPs Jairam Ramesh, KC Venugopal, and Randeep Singh Surjewala, citing unruly behavior. Of the 34 MPs suspended for the remainder of the Winter session, 11 face suspension pending an inquiry report by the Committee of Privileges. The total tally of suspended opposition members in the Rajya Sabha has now reached 46, marking a dramatic escalation in the political standoff. The Opposition INDIA bloc witnessed a significant loss, with almost half its strength depleted in the Rajya Sabha and one-third in the Lok Sabha. The Congress party alleged an "extreme level of dictatorship," accusing the government of attempting to pass crucial legislations without proper debate. In response, the BJP accused the Congress and its allies of "insulting" the Lok Sabha speaker and Rajya Sabha chairperson. The stringent action against Opposition members followed protests and sloganeering in both Houses of Parliament.
